For us, December is the time to get festive, however, the city of London comes alive as early as September for shopping, but if your looking for a city break in December here are some of our favorites, read through our guide, there really is something for everyone!

Festive Feels

  • Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park- we have been every year and it seems to get bigger every year, it runs from the end of November to the beginning of January, and it is Christmas wrapped in a park, a massive area that includes fairground rides, stalls for unique Christmas gifts and decorations, food and drink, it gets very busy but is well worth a visit.
  • Wintertime at the Southbank, lots of things go on throughout mid November to the start of January. There is a Christmas market and an area that last year had fire pits with food and drinks stall getting you in the festive spirit.
  • Leicester Square has a Santa’s Grotto and a Christmas market

Shopping

  • Harrods – the Christmas department is a must when you come here, anything Christmas is here.
  • Covent Garden this is a more grown up Christmas feel, a massive Christmas tree, good selfie spots, so cool.
  • Oxford street – you have to wait for the night to come to get the full Christmas light effect and it’s well worth the wait
  • Selfridges yep it is in oxford street, it’s the windows, their known for their window dressing, each Christmas we go it’s different theme, people just stop to check out each window.
  • Regent street again the area lights up and the best time to see is evening

Activities 

  • Ice skating outdoors with a beautiful backdrop
  • Natural history museum
  • Somerset house
  • Tower of London
  • Indoors at the winter wonderland

Christmas carols at Trafalgar Square on most days twice a day.

Pantomime – would need to be booked but what a better way to start your Christmas London trip

What to eat

  • Mulled Wine – to get you in the festive mood, at most Christmas markets
  • Bratwurst – the German sausage in different flavours following a tradition from the German Xmas markets
  • If you fancy a kind special treat for Christmas afternoon tea try The Ritz or Claridges
  • Roasted Chestnuts these can be purchased at the Christmas markets

Other Things to Know

  • Currency – Pound
  • Cost – you can go into the winter wonderland for free to wander round, but tickets for attractions need to be purchased
  • Weather – cold -hats, gloves and scarfs needed
  • Tickets – check out the websites for the attraction before you travel to make sure there is availability
