Intro to the Shard

The Shard replaced the Southwark Towers construction started in March 2009 and opened on the 5th July 2012. It has 11000 glass panels, 44 lifts and the public gallery is 309.6 meters above London. The architect Renzo Piano who designed it, said I forsee the tower as a vertical city, for thousands of people to work in and enjoy.

Visiting

  • The ticket times slots are from 9am-9pm daily (and dependant on events taking place. Last entry is usually 1 hour before closing
  • There are different packages to buy dependant on what you want from your experience, we just went on the basic one which was what we wanted, they are souvenir photo package along with weather guarantee, subject to Terms and conditions.
  • You can spend aslong as you want in the attraction
  • Lifts take about 10 seconds to get you to the viewing gallery

What to check out

  • The viewing gallery is where most people head with wonderful 360 views of London. This is on floor 68 and 69, on 72 there is the sky deck where you will open to the elements and sounds of London below. There are lots of staff around who make sure you are OK or to give you info about the whole experience. Drinks and snacks are available to purchase.
  • There are restaurants and bars which you can book if you want a dining experience.
  • There is also a hotel called Shangri La on the 52nd floor with bar and infinity pool. Rooms starting at £500
