Intro to Bamburgh

Until all the route planning for our trip around the NC500, we hadn’t really heard of this village…. or had we? Formerly known as Bebbanburg, known to those who watched The Last Kingdom is where Uhtred was from (loosely based on a real person). Entering the village, a quaint leafy place, on the coast of North East Coast of England in the county of Northumberland, you get a good feeling of a relaxed time you are about to experience.

Getting there

  • It’s 39 miles from Newcastle Airport set between Berwick upon Tweed and Alnwick.
  • We drove from Newcastle on the A1 and turned off at Adderstone Services and followed the B1341 and its about 5 miles.
  • There is a car park near the castle however they had an overflow car park in operation.

What to do

  • Bamburgh Castle- sitting perched on basalt Rock overlooking the glorious Bamburgh beach is truly a sight to see. This castle has a long history dating back over 1400 years. A particularly nice thing we found about the area is the green in front of the castle itself was used to let people play croquet, and generally hang out for picnics and dog walking etc and gives access to the beach and stunning view of the castle and surrounding areas.
  • Bamburgh Beach – wow this beach looked amazing, the perimeter was surrounded by some dreamy sand dunes, which opened onto white beaches and the deep blue of North Sea.
  • St Aidans Church – this was adjacent to the overflow car park, a pretty little church with a graveyard, the resting place of Grace Darling.
  • Grace Darling Museum – founded in 1938, 100 years after the incident, tells a story of a young girl with her father  who rescued stranded passengers from a ship that had sprung a leak in a storm. Run by the RNLI.

We really enjoyed our time here and hope you do too!!

Other Things to Know

  • Currency – Pounds
  • There are places to stay here to soak up an idyllic English village.
  • Cost – adult ticket to the castle £12.50
  • Weather – May 2021 was 20 degrees
  • IMPORTANT – Due to restrictions due to the Pandemic we were told that you need to book tickets online before trying to go in the castle. We would also suggest to check for for filming schedules as this is a popular film location when we were there they were gearing up to film Indian Jones 5. Luckily this didn’t start until a few days after our visit, when the castle would have been inaccessible.
