Intro to the Natural History Museum
The first thing you notice is the imposing structure, built out of terracotta the doors opened in April 1881. Once inside the magnificence of the architecture continues known affectionately as the cathedral to nature, it is split into 4 zones orange, green, blue and red for you to discover all things nature.
Visiting
- It’s open 10-17.50 every day. Apart from 24-26 December
- Nearest station is South Kensington its about a 5 minute walk.
- If driving there is no onsite parking. However there is a limited number for blue badge holders which need to be booked in advance see web address at the bottom
- There are three entrances – Cromwell Road, exhibition Road and Queens Gate.
What to check out
- Blue zone features everything from dinosaurs to mammals, you will our amazing earth then and now. Cool feature is the roaring Trexand the Dino gallery. Also, the hall with the blue whale in is a must see, the size of it is truly a sight.
- Red zone meet the stegosaurus at the entrance to the earth Hall again its imposing size at 3 metres high and 6 metres long is the most intact fossil of this dinosaur ever found and then we go into nature volcanoes and experience an earthquake in a simulator
- Orange zone takes us outside to the wildlife garden and the Darwin centre exploring science and nature
- Green zone holds our personal favourite hintze Hall where you can beneath the largest animal on earth, the blue whale skeleton at a whooping 25.2 metre, and also take in the amazing Hall itself and the view all round. Then continue on to explore the other items making 4.5 billion years of natural history.
