You are going to love this city, from Times Square to Central Park – definitely can see why it is the city that never sleeps!
“It’s ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story
-Agatha Christie
Getting there
- We flew from London To JFK airport flight time under 8 hours
- We took a taxi from JFK to Times Square costs $60
- You can take the A train and change to where you need too, but as this was our first time we were glad to grab a cab
Where to stay
- Hotel – we stayed on 49th street at The Time, they were going through some renovations at the time, we were in a newly renovated room and it was a great stay
- Airbnb – studios in manhattan start from £80
What to do
- Before we left we purchased a New York Pass, if you sign up to their email early enough you may get sent a discount code – this was our virgin experience of the hop on hop off buses which you got 24 hours included and we have got the buses ever since. If you google the pass you will see different offers
- I can’t name every sight ( well I probably could but it will go on and on so I’m just going to give you some ideas as the main ones are well documented)
- For Sports fans, the Madison Square Gardens tour is a must, you get a group guided tour around this amazing venue, steeped in sports and entertainment history. You get to sit high up in the sky box and at view at court level.
- For Theatre fans, get up early and join the queues in Times Square box offices for tickets to broadway shows.
- For the tourist, get to attractions early ie Empire State Building , do the top of the Rockafella and so forth. We went in August and they were busy
- There is so much to see like Hell’s Kitchen , the financial district, Brooklyn Bridge , Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the high line which we personally loved.
- Check out our Top 5 free things to do in NYC
What to eat
- There are so many different areas to choose from which have their own niche food – Chinatown and little Italy
- It is a foodies heaven
- Shake shack – we visited the first ever shake shack for our first experience it was good in Madison Park ( might have been cos we were ravenous due to lots of sightseeing)
Other Things to Know
- Currency – USA dollar
- Cost – we stayed here three years ago so I haven’t included pricing as probably out of date
- Weather – we stayed in NYC in August it was a very hot summer time
- Tipping – same as the rest of America
- Getting around – As above NY pass but we walked lots and used the Metro station to go to Brooklyn
Editors note – There is an designer outlet for shopping called Woodbury Common it’s about an hour drive but they have buses that go that route. One of us spent a lot of money here as the £ was strong against the $.
