Intro to Liverpool
The city of Liverpool is in the north west of England, historically known for its shipping roots, with Liverpool being on the eastern side of the Mersey. More recently Liverpool is also known as the birth place of The Beatles and home to two of the most famous football teams in England!
Getting there
- So based in London a train would take about 2 hours 30 minutes and cost from £40 as an estimate. You are able to get better deals on the train in the UK if you are able to purchase advance tickets online, however of course this does restrict you with what trains you can get on.
- Lime Street train station is the major train station which you will probably arrive into and is quite central in the city.
- Hotels in the area start from £35 for an Easy Hotel (which is where stayed) and go up considerably in price for something more upmarket which you might expect in any major city.
What to do
- Whatever you know of these guys you can’t visit Liverpool without some reference to the Fab Four- The Beatles! The city is understandably very proud of the Beatles and there is lots of reference to them all around the city. Some of which include a tour on a bus which stops at Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane (which were two of the Beatles most famous songs) where you can learn some of the inspirations behind the music. There is also the Beatles experience museum, the famous Cavern Club and the Beatles statue. Even if you are not an avid fan you will get sucked into Beatlemania if you visit Liverpool!
- With most cities in the UK, there is a cathedral and Liverpool is no different as it has a grade 1 listed cathedral. To visit entry is free but you can buy tickets for an audio and film tour £5.50 for an adult ticket and opens from 8am-6pm, you can also pay to get the Tower Experience
- The Liverpool maritime mercantile city is a UNESCO world heritage site. A series of significant commercial, civic and public buildings lie within this area- including the Pier Head, with its three principal waterfront buildings – the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building, and Port of Liverpool Building so much history in one area. We got on a hop on hop off bus and they gave a wonderful overview of the city
- Royal Albert Docks which is home to the Beatles Museum, the Tate Liverpool and the Merseyside maritime museum song with little boutique and unique souvenir shops and places to eat, great place for fish and chips
- With Liverpool having a large student community there are a vast range of places to eat with all different price ranges
- If you think it looks like a cross between a lamb and a banana, you hit the nail on the head. At 17ft tall and weighing in at eight tonnes, Superlambanana has become a cult favourite in a city that has always embraced the artistic, flamboyant and downright quirky and you will find different ones dotted around the city on a smaller scale. (Pictured below)
- If you are interested in football at all then you will know of Liverpool FC which are one of the most successful teams in England and Europe. If you do visit Liverpool then you can visit their famous stadium Anfield and go on a stadium tour. If you do arrive by train then there is sometimes two for one tickets available if you print a voucher off online.
