One word of advice would be to just be wary of some of the ‘friendly’ people outside who will tell you that Wat Pho is closed for the day due to a Thai holiday before trying to sell you a tour of other places in the city. We found people approached us outside many sites in Bangkok with this line, however the place we intended in visiting was never actually closed!
Wat Pho: A Glimpse of Thai Spirituality
The Reclining Buddha: The iconic Reclining Buddha is a breathtaking sight to behold. Stretching 46 meters in length and adorned with intricate mother-of-pearl inlay, this statue is one of the world’s largest and most revered Buddha images. Traditional Thai Massage: Wat Pho is also known as the “birthplace of Thai massage.” You can experience an authentic Thai massage within the temple grounds, a perfect way to unwind after exploring the site.
How to Get to Wat Pho from the Center of Bangkok
By Train/Metro: Wat Pho is conveniently accessible by the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS Skytrain) and the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) subway. Here’s how you can reach Wat Pho using public transport:
- BTS Skytrain: Take the BTS to the Saphan Taksin station (S6) on the Silom Line. From there, you can transfer to a Chao Phraya Express Boat at Sathorn Pier, which is nearby, and cruise along the river to Tha Tien Pier, located right next to Wat Pho. This is a scenic and efficient way to get to the temple, offering beautiful river views along the way. The combined BTS and boat journey should take approximately 30-40 minutes.
- MRT Subway: Alternatively, you can take the MRT subway to the Sanam Chai station (M1). From there, Wat Pho is just a short walk away. The temple is located within walking distance from the station, and it should take around 10-15 minutes to reach the entrance on foot.
By Tuk-Tuk: A fun and adventurous way to reach Wat Pho is by taking a tuk-tuk from the city center. Tuk-tuks are small, motorized vehicles that can navigate through the city’s traffic. Negotiate the fare with the driver before starting your journey.
By Boat: You can catch a Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha Tien Pier, which is located near Wat Pho. This is a scenic and convenient way to reach the temple, with the added bonus of experiencing the city from the river.
By Taxi: Taxis are readily available in Bangkok. Ensure the meter is turned on or agree on a fixed fare with the driver before starting your journey.
Costs at Wat Pho
Entrance Fee: As of my last knowledge update in August 2023, the entrance fee to Wat Pho was 100 Thai Baht (around $3 USD) per person. Please check for the most up-to-date information before your visit, as prices can change.
Thai Massage: The cost of a traditional Thai massage within the temple grounds varies depending on the type and duration of the massage. Expect to pay around 300-600 Thai Baht (approximately $10-20 USD) for a standard massage.
Guided Tours: If you prefer a guided tour, you can hire a local guide for an additional fee, which can provide you with valuable insights into the history and significance of Wat Pho.
