Intro to Lokrum Island

Lokrum Island is near Dubrovnik, there are no human inhabitants on the island, but it is home to free roaming peacocks and rabbits. No one is allowed to stay on the island overnight, maybe that how it has retained its stunning beauty. It is now a nature reserve.

Getting there

  • From the small harbour in Dubrovnik it is a 15 minutes boat ride.
  • The coast on the boat we took was 150 kuna each, the boats run every 20 minutes (I would imagine it depends on the season

What to do

  • The island has a trail to follow and its well signposted all the way round. Some parts of the pathways are uneven, there are also steep steps. There are 12 points of interest which have maps regualry through the island. These are our favourite points
  • Dead Sea Lake – (this was our favourite) the lake is fed by an underwater seawater channel, the water is so clear, the contrast between the lake and the cliffs around is sublime, just a natural beauty spot. Good area for sunbathing and swimming.
  • For the Got fans some of the season 2 seasons in Quarth were filmed in the monastery and botanical gardens
  • The path to paradise is a steep climb which takes you 315 feet above sea level. The views on the way up are worth the climb.
  • At the top of the path mentioned above is Fort Royal Castle, which was erected by the French in 1806, again great views from the top of the Fort of the spectacular surrounding coastline
  • There are swimming points around the coastline, lots of cliffs, so if you have young children hold on tight, however there is a recreational park area and obviously the rabbits which will fill up their day.

Other Things to Know

  • Currency – kuna
  • Cost – just the ferry
  • Restaurants and Cafes are on the island which we were surprised about, which seemed to be reasonably priced also placed to purchase ice creams and lollies.
  • Take swimwear, we missed out on this but had a paddle water was lovely
  • Shoes wear some with good grip
  • Tourist Information centre in the little harbour on the island
  • Traveltaggers fact- back in 12th century, the island was shelter to King Richard the Lionheart while he was shipwrecked on his way back home from the 3rd Crusade
