Intro to Hop On Hop Off

If you have read any of our other guides you will know we love a hop on hop off bus, which does what it says on the tin you can hop off and back on, which was what we thought we were getting on, as we had run to the tour guide and were told it leaves In 5 minutes, so quickly we grabbed our tickets and jumped on board. However this was not a normal hop on hop off, it was so much more. On board, we were given unique snippets of information about Split. Then informed about our itinerary- the olive oil museum, Klis Fort and some caves, we wanted to go to the Fort so its all good. However, this tour was so good and diverse in what we saw, we will explain each section below

STELLA CROATICA

  • First part was to see the production factory, where they were preparing all kinds of delights from fig to orange to the packing centre.
  • Then we went back in time and shown a traditional family homestead and how they lived
  • Outside we were shown the distillation process for the olive oil
  • Into the garden we went full of different lavender and immortal etc which was planted for use
  • Then we went into a presentation (for want of a better word) or museum shown how traditionally Olive Oil was made
  • Finally we entered the tasting area – there were lots of samples to try or honey original and flavoured, Olive Oil lots of different types to dip bread in, fig cake and prune cake to try and finally some coated almonds and crystallised  oranges and lemons and beauty products. Which we all available to purchase if you wished too. we had a guided tour all the way round explaining different parts etc.
  • No extra to pay unless you purchased something.

KLIS FORT

  • You can go around the outside the Fort ground free, there is a 60 kuna charge to go in
  • We went in, terrific view points to be seen
  • Game of Thrones film location where Danreys killed the masters of Mereen. You definitely see why the Fort was used
  • A Museum with the history of the Fort
  • Different levels to walk through and look out over the beauty of Croatia and the Adriatic Sea

Caves

  • A guided passionate tour of the caves was charged at the end for 40 kuna
  • There was about a 10 minute walk down to the reception area of the caves
  • We were then led into these by the way of steps going down with a rope handle support to steady you if needed on the stairs. At first I had concerns about trying to wiggle through some little gaps as some tours I have read about but this was nothing like this.
  • We descended down like a human snake of about 20 people our guide was the grandson of the origin discover of the caves and its been a family business ever since, we were talked about the discovery by his 12 year old grandad, about stalagmites and stalactites an the crystals we would have seen if there hadn’t been such unseasonable weather in the past few weeks.
  • We saw quite a few different areas of cave and lots of facts and stories, even one about how many sons came from the family until just recently maybe it was the water source, was one suggestion. We are pointed to different rock formations that looked like everyday items. Some bat’s that lived there and of course the caves themselves.
  • This took about an hour and ascent was a lot quicker and on arrival back to the reception we were given a shot glass of the owner grapple which was very intoxicating and warming.. Wow.

Other Things to Know

  • Time – about 5 hours
  • Cost – the bus was 150 kuna each
  • Shoes wear some with good grip
