He likes the beach and you want to learn about the place and the culture… This is the perfect way to do both!
If we give a little overview on how we started these, our bucket list holiday was going to Hawaii. What we didn’t realise was that you are not able to fly to Hawaii directly from the UK, you have to go into USA and get a connecting flight rather than flying straight there.
So that had us looking where we would fly into and after a little research we found that Los Angeles would be ideal! The flight from the UK to LA is around 11 hours and then would be another 5 onto Oahu. Spending 16 straight hours at the start of our holiday on a plane didn’t sound like the best of starts, so we decided to stay over in LA for a few days in between flights.
If like us, you like to get the most of your time and explore this is definitely for you!
In LA, we packed so much in for the days we were there it was almost like getting two holidays into one! Using the hop on hop off bus and planning ahead we managed to get around a lot of the sights in LA which we wouldn’t have previously got to visit. Seeing the city for this small amount of time gave us such a good impression of LA that we are planning on heading back for a longer amount of time!
Things to take into account when planning:
- Where you want to spend most time.
- Which place is further.
- Do you want to explore first and then relax if doing different things in different places.
- Flight times to each destination.
- Always check which airline has the best flight times, length and prices, rather than just the connecting flights.
- Be prepared, a couple of times we have caught connecting flights in the USA and the internal flights have been delayed or rushing to catch the connecting as some flights have more than one stop.
We like to go to lots of different places when we travel and make the most of our holiday. Chances are you have worked hard to save up to pay for it so you definitely have to make the most of it!
Differently research what you want to do and how you can get around and can you fit it all in.
- Are there specific sights you want to see? Plot then on a map!
- Is there trolleys or hop on hop off buses – check out our travel guide about hop on hop off experiences. These are designed to get you to all the sights. You will find deals for the travel and entrance to attractions or multi buy to include discounts for example New York has a New York pass which does just this and if you sign up to their email in advance you can often get sent discounts to use.
- Where to stay- LA for example we stayed near the airport (wasn’t disturbed by plane noise) which cut down on time to get to and from the airport, and the Hop On Hop off buses had a connecting bus which stopped just outside the hotel and from the airport to the hotel there was a free shuttle bus.
We know the research is boring but it saves you time and money if you know what you are doing and how you are getting there. Time is precious.
